Why Is It So Rare to Find a Pre-Owned Cape Cod?

It is with immense joy that we welcome a new CAPE CODER to the prestigious family of CAPE COD sailboat owners today.

Olivier, a passionate enthusiast, has just acquired a 2016 Cape Cod 896, a magnificent daysailer that has sailed with elegance for nearly 10 years in the sublime Tuscan waters. While this acquisition is worth celebrating, it raises a recurring question that many luxury yachting enthusiasts ask us: why is it so difficult to get your hands on such a dayboat?

In this article, we explain in detail the reasons for this rarity, the technical constraints associated with older models, and the best solution to bring your sailing project to life, guided by the Rosewest shipyard, designer and builder of resin and teak wood dayboat sailboats.

The Absolute Rarity of Pre-Owned Cape Cods on the Market

There are two fundamental reasons that explain the difficulty of finding a used Cape Cod today.

The Deep Attachment of Our Owners

The first reason, and undoubtedly the most rewarding for our shipyard, lies in the attachment of our clients. Our owners lovingly keep their boats year after year. A Rosewest vessel is not a simple consumer good; it is an object of passion that very few of them would ever consider parting with!

Why? Because of the recognized qualities of our elegant and high-performance dayboats:

  • Accessibility: Each of our models is a comfortable, full-centerboard dinghy capable of beaching flat. Thanks to their shallow draft (43 cm and 22 cm respectively, with the centerboard up), we can access shallow waters that are usually out of reach.

  • Comfort: Trailerable depending on the model, they are also “livable” as they are equipped with a small cabin and two berths for one or two nights on board.

  • An Unrivaled Boat: Once owners have fully understood the boat’s program, they have absolutely no reason to change it!

A Deliberately Exclusive Production

The second reason is purely mathematical and intimately linked to our building philosophy. The volume of units produced remains intentionally exclusive to guarantee an impeccable level of finish. To date, we have produced around 35 units for the 896 model, and only 6 units for the highly exclusive 767 Lounge. This high-end production naturally limits the available supply for any buyer hoping to find a pre-owned Cape Cod.

What to Do When You Finally Find a Used Cape Cod?

When luck smiles and you manage to acquire a used Cape Cod, the technical reality should not be overlooked: major refit steps are often necessary to get it shipshape again. Beyond cosmetics (hull painting, adjustments and repairs, upgrading the deck covering and teak accessories, changing sails, halyards, sheets, lines…), naval architecture is evolving rapidly, and our shipyard is constantly innovating. Thus, older versions have inevitably been surpassed by recent developments engineered by our design office.

Key Upgrades on a pre-owned Cape Cod 896

Taking the specific example of the 896, the most recent units benefit from major advancements. Among them is the installation of a hydraulic keel-lifting system, which allows its weight to be increased with 200 kg of lead at the bottom. The result: an even better righting moment and, following the same logic, a lighter rig. All of this combines to offer even more performance and ease of use.

The Technical Refit of a pre-owned Cod 767

Regarding the 767, the differences between the first series and current models are equally spectacular. The evolution of the steering system has transformed the sensitivity and precision of the helm.

Above all, the motorization has been completely redesigned with an engine change and a strategic modification of its placement in the boat. The thruster is now located under the hull on a retractable pod along the boat’s centerline, offering a sleek design and perfect ergonomics, since it can be adjusted with just one turn of a winch.

The Perfect Alternative to a pre-owned Cape Cod: A New Build Project

Faced with the technical challenges of a comprehensive refit and the extreme difficulty of finding that rare gem on the market, the simplest approach in the absence of a pre-owned Cape Cod is to turn to a new construction project. Opting for a new daysailer allows you to immediately integrate all the latest architectural and technological evolutions, and still have a unique sailboat built that will meet all your desires, requirements, and sailing habits.

Why are used Cape Cod sailboats so rare on the market? The rarity of pre-owned Cape Cods can be explained by two main factors. On one hand, owners develop a deep attachment to their boat and lovingly keep it year after year, considering this Rosewest vessel as a true object of passion. On the other hand, production is deliberately exclusive to guarantee flawless finishes: to date, there are only about 35 units for the 896 model and 6 units for the recent 767.

What refit work should be expected when buying a pre-owned Cape Cod? Acquiring a secondhand model often requires major refit steps to get it back in shape. Beyond simple cosmetic work (hull painting, repairs, changing halyards and sheets, upgrading the deck covering, repairing or reworking teak elements…), the rapid evolution of naval architecture must be taken into account. Older models do not feature the latest innovations from our design office, such as the hydraulic keel-lifting system on the 896 or the redesigned motorization on a retractable pod for the 767.

Is it better to buy a used Cape Cod or opt for a new project? Faced with the lack of used sailboats on the market and the technical challenges associated with a comprehensive renovation, turning to a new build often remains the simplest solution. Opting for a new daysailer guarantees that you immediately integrate all the latest technological and architectural evolutions, thereby sparing you from heavy adaptation work.

In summary: The exclusivity of our fleet and the loyalty of our owners make the secondhand market particularly limited.

We currently have a waiting list at the shipyard of several interested individuals: Congratulations to Olivier for your patience; as someone who recently missed out on another opportunity, you know that available Cape Cods require responsiveness, quick travel, and fast decision-making, just like at sea! A good deal never stays on the market for long!

Rather than waiting indefinitely or embarking on heavy refit work, why not bring the sailboat of your dreams to life? Contact the Rosewest shipyard today to discuss your desires, request a custom quote for a new build, and join the highly exclusive community of CAPE CODERS yourself.
